What is cake pricing?
A cake pricing calculator turns every cost of a custom order into a quote: ingredients, your time at an hourly rate, packaging, overhead and delivery, plus payment fees and a profit margin. A cake with $120 of listed costs, a 3% card fee and a 25% margin should be quoted at about $166.67.
Total costs ÷ (1 − Margin − Payment fee %)Hours × Hourly rate (even if you bake it yourself)Quote ÷ ServingsExample: a 20-serving birthday cake
- Ingredients $30; 4 hours at $15 = $60; box, board and toppers $10
- Utilities and equipment share $10; delivery $10: total costs $120
- Quote: $120 ÷ (1 − 0.25 − 0.03) = $166.67, about $8.33 per serving
- Card fee 3% = $5.00; profit after all listed costs and the fee = $41.67
Dividing by (1 − margin − fee) makes the margin and the fee percentages of the final price, which is how you actually receive them.
Common mistakes
- Not paying yourself. Your hours are a real cost; without them the quote only covers groceries.
- Adding margin on top of cost instead of on the price. Cost × 1.25 gives a 20% margin, not 25%.
Cake Pricing FAQ
How much should I charge per slice or serving?
Divide the full quote by the number of servings. Quoting per serving makes it easy to scale prices across cake sizes.
What hourly rate should a home baker use?
At least what you would pay someone else to do the work, including taxes. Many home bakers underprice because they leave their time out.
Should sales tax be in the quote?
Quote before tax and add sales tax where your state requires it. Check your state and local rules for food sales.
