What is Average Order Value (AOV)?

Average order value (AOV) is the average amount a customer spends per order. Divide net sales revenue by the number of orders: $10,000 from 200 orders is a $50 AOV. Raising AOV grows revenue from the same traffic, which is why stores test bundles, free-shipping thresholds and upsells.

AOVNet revenue ÷ Orders
Orders per customerOrders ÷ Unique customers
Revenue per customerNet revenue ÷ Unique customers

Example: setting a free-shipping threshold

A store sells $10,000 across 200 orders from 150 customers in a month.

  1. AOV: $10,000 ÷ 200 = $50
  2. Orders per customer: 200 ÷ 150 ≈ 1.33
  3. Revenue per customer: $10,000 ÷ 150 ≈ $66.67

A free-shipping threshold a little above the current AOV, such as $60, nudges buyers to add one more item. Check that the extra margin covers the shipping you absorb.

Common mistakes

  • Mixing gross and net sales. Decide whether taxes, shipping and refunds are included and keep it the same every month.
  • Raising AOV with discounts that cut margin. A bigger basket at a lower margin can earn less profit per order.
Common questions

Average Order Value (AOV) FAQ

How do I calculate AOV in Shopify or Google Analytics?

Both report it directly, but check the revenue definition: Shopify’s figures may include or exclude shipping and taxes depending on the report. For a consistent number, divide your net sales by orders yourself.

Is AOV the same as revenue per customer?

No. AOV is per order. Revenue per customer also reflects how many times each customer ordered in the period.

How can I increase AOV?

Bundles, volume pricing, free-shipping thresholds, add-on suggestions at checkout and premium versions of best-sellers are the usual levers. Test them against profit per order, not only AOV.
